Advantages Of Affiliate Marketing

By Golden Thread Review | Aug 12, 2008

Affiliate marketing, when done correctly, can be extremely beneficial for both the affiliate and the publisher. Here are six advantages of affiliate marketing from both sides.

1. For the affiliate: Don’t need to have their own product

A lot of people don’t have the time, money or expertise to create their own product, so affiliate marketing is a great way to make money off other peoples hard work. This also means an affiliate doesn’t have to worry about researching the market to find what people want. Instead they only have to find which products are selling well.

2. For the affiliate: No customer support required

Anyone who has ever had their own product will tell you that customer support is one of the worst parts of running a business. Affiliates get to keep their share of the profits without ever having to worry about being in contact with the customers. All the problems are dealt with by the publishers customer support department.

3. For the affiliate: Only a small investment required

There aren’t many business models which allow you to start up with virtually no investment, but affiliate marketing can be one of them. When using free traffic the only investment is time. Of course, there are paid methods of traffic generation also, but in general becoming an affiliate marketer is a low cost business with the potential of being very profitable.

4. For the affiliate: Working from home

It’s many people’s dream to work from home and only when they feel like it. Affiliate marketing isn’t paid on an hourly rate so you can choose the hours you want to work. Some people do affiliate marketing as a hobby, others as a full time job. The beauty is it’s completely up to the individual. It is important to remember though that the more effort you put into affiliate marketing the greater the rewards in most cases.

5. For the publisher: A much greater audience will be exposed to the product

One of the main advantages for a publisher who has an affiliate program is that the affiliates have the potential to reach a much wider audience then he or she ever could on their own. This means there can be many more sales than there would have been if the publisher was the only person promoting the product, for a relatively small amount of extra effort.

6. For the publisher: Less effort needed to drive traffic

Getting traffic to a website can be a time consuming process, so to have a large amount of affiliates doing this for you is a huge advantage for any publisher. By using affiliates the publisher has to spend less time worrying about getting people to the sales page leaving more time for other areas of the business. Leveraging other people’s effort for your own business is a great way to make a lot of money.

There are many advantages of internet marketing for both the affiliate and the publisher which is why it has proven to be such a successful business model. Affiliate marketing has generated many people a healthy income, and will do so for the foreseeable future.

Affiliate Marketing Partnerships - How To Make The Most Of Them

By Golden Thread Review | Aug 12, 2008

An affiliate marketing partnership between a publisher and affiliate can take many different forms, although only a few are genuinely popular. In all cases the affiliate receives a payment for getting a visitor to complete an action, whether that is purchasing a product, subscribing to an e-mail list or just visiting the page. Below are the four most common forms of affiliate marketing partnerships.

Cost Per Sale (CPS)
Cost per sale is the most common form of affiliate marketing. It simply means that for each sale the publisher make as a result of the affiliate, the affiliate get pays a commission. Usually this commission is a percentage of the profit made by the publisher for that particular sale.

This form is popular amongst publishers as it means that they only have to payout when they’ve made sales, and is popular amongst affiliates because the commissions can be generous. The two biggest networks of CPS offers are Clickbank and Commission Junction. Clickbank specialises in digital products, while Commission Junction has many more “brick-and-mortar” businesses looking for affiliates.

Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)
CPA is also sometimes referred to as cost per action. In a CPA affiliate partnership, the affiliate is paid money whenever a visitor completes a certain action. For example this action could be filling in a survey, joining an opt-in list or in some cases making a purchase.
CPA affiliate marketing has become more and more popular in recent years amongst affiliates because you can receive reasonably high payouts for some actions. Also, getting someone to join an e-mail list for example is often easier than getting someone to buy a product.

The money paid out for each action or acquisition varies for each publisher, and there are many CPA networks with thousands of CPA offers on the internet. Some popular networks are Azoogle, Commission Junction and CPA Empire.

Cost Pet Thousand Impressions (CPM)
Cost per thousand impressions is when a publisher pays an affiliate a certain amount of money for every thousand visitors sent, regardless of how many of these bought the product or completed an action. This kind of partnership is much less common today than CPA and CPS, mainly because publishers know that it is not the amount of visitors that they get to their sales page but the quality of the traffic that’s important.

This kind of system also isn’t popular amongst affiliates because the payouts are generally much less than CPA or CPS, reflecting the low value publishers give to this sort of partnership. However there are some companies that still offer CPM affiliate partnerships.

Cost Per Click (CPC)
This is similar to CPM, but instead the affiliate is paid on a per click basis. Again, this kind of partnership isn’t favoured by publishers because the affiliate is paid regardless of whether any sales were made.

The vast majority of affiliate partnerships, some estimate up to 99% on the modern internet, take the form of CPS and CPA. This is because they give the greatest monetary benefits for both the affiliate and publisher.

Affiliate Marketing Scams - How To Avoid Them

By Golden Thread Review | Aug 11, 2008

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money, but it also relies on a certain amount of trust between affiliate and publisher. Because of this it is important to know what to look out for when it comes to affiliate marketing scams, whether you’re a publisher or an affiliate.

Publisher Scams

Affiliate marketing relies on the publisher or network accurately tracking which visitors are sent by which affiliates, and then rewarding those who send the traffic that converts to sales. A corrupt publisher could not pay an affiliate all they are owed, or pay a lesser percentage than advertised to try and take more of the profit.

If you’re an affiliate and worried about being scammed by a publisher or network, then it’s best to stick with one of the more reputable affiliate networks as they are known to be legitimate. Some examples are Clickbank, Commission Junction and PayDotCom. You need to be more careful when signing up to publishers own affiliate programs as these have more potential to be dishonest.

Affiliate Scams

There are also ways an affiliate can attempt to scam a publisher by tricking them into thinking a sale or action has been made and hence gaining commissions.

For example, some publishers pay per click instead of per sale. It is possible for an affiliate to try and set up a script that mimics online behaviour to make the publisher think traffic is being driven to their site when in reality the traffic is worthless. This is one of the main reasons why paying for PPC traffic from an affiliate is a much less popular model than per sale.

In rare cases, an affiliate may try to purchase a product using money that isn’t theirs. For example through a hacked Paypal account or stolen credit card.

The best way for publishers to prevent affiliate scams is to check each application individual and only pick the ones that have a well run and reputable website. However this isn’t always possible with affiliate networks.

A common method for affiliates to gain sales without actually sending the visitor to the sales page is through a technique known as cookie stuffing. Cookie stuffing is when an affiliate places a tracking cookie on every visitor that enters their site, so that if the visitor then goes and buys a product the affiliate gets the sale even though they didn’t send the visitor. Publishers don’t want to pay commission on a sale just because the customer visited an affiliate’s site beforehand, so this is another example of an affiliate scam.

The majority of affiliates and publishers realise the great benefits for each side when it comes to the affiliate-publisher relationship. If handled correctly, a publisher can make many more sales than otherwise possible with an affiliate program and an affiliate can make a lot of money. Scams will always be found out in the long run and will damage a business when they are. As an affiliate or publisher it’s important to keep out eye out for potential scams.

Affiliate Marketing Basics - How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

By Golden Thread Review | Aug 10, 2008

Affiliate marketing is a great way to start making money on the internet. It doesn’t require you to have created your own product, the start-up costs are small and beginners can start seeing results relatively quickly. The basic definition is often overcomplicated by marketers, but in simple terms it’s when a publisher agrees to pay an affiliate a percentage of the profits for any visitor they send that buys the product. In effect, an affiliate is a middle man for the publisher’s product.

The affiliate-publisher relationship is attractive to both sides which is what makes it so successful. The affiliate gets to make good money by driving traffic to a site without having to pay the cost of getting a product created. The publisher gets potentially thousands of affiliates driving huge amounts of traffic to his or her sales page.

You can find affiliate programs through many websites, but two of the most popular are Clickbank and Commission Junction. These sites act as networks of publishers looking for affiliates to help sell their products, and you can find companies in most niches on these sites. Clickbank is for digital products, while Commission Junction focuses more on tangible goods, and both sites are free to sign up.

Once you’ve chosen the product you want to promote, in most cases you will be given a unique URL through which you should send all your traffic. Many affiliate schemes have a cookie planted on the visitor once they enter through an affiliate link so that if they leave and return to buy you still get paid the commission. It should be noted at this point that in the majority of cases you should never have to pay to join an affiliate program, so be wary of any that charge.

As previously mentioned, another reason affiliate marketing is so popular amongst new marketers is that the start up cost is very small. In fact it can cost nothing apart from you time as there are plenty of free ways to drive traffic to an affiliate link.

So what are these free ways to get traffic to the affiliate page and eventually earn commissions? There are many but the most popular amongst beginner marketers is article marketing. This method is a good way to start, as most people can write short articles reasonably quickly and start seeing results within a few days. The idea is to write an article on the same topic as the product you’re promoting. Once the article has been written it’s then submitted to an article directory. At the bottom of the article the author is allowed to include a short bio which can include links to a landing page and on this landing page is an affiliate link.

A paid method of traffic generation is to use a Pay-Per-Click search engine such as Google Adwords to buy targeted visitors in your niche. This isn’t recommended for beginners as it has a steep learning curve and has the potential to lose you a lot of money, but is definitely worth considering once you start to see some sales.

Learning Affiliate Marketing - Understand The Basics Of Affiliate Marketing

By Golden Thread Review | Aug 9, 2008

There’s no doubt that affiliate marketing can be extremely profitable, but with so much information around how do you know who to trust? When starting out, a beginner can easily become overwhelmed by all the different strategies, keywords and advice. It’s important to remember that making money as an affiliate is effectively a very simple process, and the more you over-complicate things the harder it will be to make money.

When you break affiliate marketing down there are three main steps:

1. Find a good product to promote This is where many people make mistakes. Always choose a product that is selling well and is popular, as this means people are buying. Remember that if there is lots of competition that’s a good thing, as it means there are people willing to purchase the product.

2. Send traffic to the affiliate link This is probably the hardest part, but there are plenty of options when it comes to traffic generation (see below).

3. Get paid commissions For every visitor you send that buys the product you get paid a percentage. These commissions are then added up and paid to you either by cheque or directly to your bank account.

Of course, it is how you go about these steps (especially 1 and 2) that decides whether you will make a lot of money from affiliate marketing. However if you ever find yourself overwhelmed by all the available information just come back to these three points and remember the underlying simplicity of affiliate marketing.

Once you’ve picked your product it’s time to start generating traffic to your affiliate link. There are literally hundreds of ways to do this, but many aren’t worth your time and will get you very few results. Some of the more popular ways of sending traffic to an affiliate page are:

• Article Marketing • Forum Posting • Blog Commenting • PPC

This is definitely an area you need to track. For example, if you find that article marketing is making you a lot of sales but forum posting is taking as much time and not making any sales at all, then you know either to concentrate more on article marketing or optimise your forum posting strategies.

One very important technique when learning affiliate marketing or any business strategy is tracking your results. If you properly keep track of questions such as which products sell well, which articles attract the most views etc then you’ll be able to see what works and what doesn’t for yourself. For example, if you find that a particular product sells well when you send traffic through one technique but not through another than you know to concentrate your efforts on the technique that works to maximise your profits. It’s vital to work out what is effective for you.

Remember that affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme, but if done properly it can make a lot of money. Focus on learning what works and what doesn’t, and this will allow you to hone your strategy to make the most possible profit.
